Throughout lent we have taken a journey of lament, stressing the idea of a journey which lament takes us on, which ultimately leads us to the cross. We have followed Psalm 130, highlighting the different elements of lament which one experiences in each individual verse. The final verse of Psalm 130 (and the central verse/theme of this service) focuses on the centrality of Jesus Christ. “HE HIMSELF” is the key focus, the central figure, and sole source of the redemption story. This ‘centrality’ is emphasized through a “chiastic” structure of different preaching movements. The first three movements introduce the problem of sin, especially focusing on the burden they bring along with them. Through these movements we see an image of a “suffering servant, of sorts, who bears the burden of our sin and suffers on our behalf. Through these prophecies, we increasingly see allusions and echoes to Jesus, as he endured the pain of the cross. The central section (Psalm 130:8) clearly identifies Jesus as this “suffering servant.” The only one who could bear our sins, and provide redemption. The perfect spotless lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. The final three movements connect to their OT counterpart, showing how Jesus himself was the fulfilment of prophecy, or the perfect/only one who could “undo” the problem of sin. Through these movements, Jesus as the “sole redeemer” is heavily reinforced. But through these movements, we also see a picture of the new (better) life we are called to, which is shaped by who Jesus showed himself to be.
