Anyone can quote Scripture to insist that God agrees with their political views. This has led to problems between Christianity and civil governments throughout history. As disciples of Jesus, we find ourselves living in a tension between being the people of God and living in a world that does not know or acknowledge God. As we live in that tension, we remember that God works both in His church and in worldly governments. As disciples of Jesus, our goal should never be to make our nation Christian, but to reflect Christ in our nation.
