Some object that they cannot identify with the Church or Christian individuals because they see such an appalling record of hypocrisy.

The church is full of hypocrites because in order to be a Christian a person must admit that they are in fact sinful and in need of forgiveness.  The Bible says, “This is how you should live if you believe this” but it also says “you can’t, and you won’t” and provides the solution to the problem of hypocrisy in Jesus.   To be a Christian is not to be perfect, but forgiven.  How does your relationship with Jesus act as medicine against hypocrisy?
