Passing the Faith On (LR)

The first generation of Israelites out of Egypt did not always do the best job of demonstrating faith to their children.  Despite their failures in this area, the LORD still raised their children up to inherit the land that was promised to them.  The first generation of Israelites observed the Passover (Num. 9) and retold the stories of the LORD to their children.  The passing on of the faith to children and grandchildren is the duty of parents and grandparents, together with the community of God’s people (the Church).  Families (not just individuals) would be blessed, the LORD told Abraham, by what He had promised (Gen. 12). We see this in Deuteronomy 6:6-9, as well. In Acts, we see the Philippian jailer’s whole family comes to faith, as a result of Paul and Silas sharing of the Good News about Jesus. The Church (Paul and Silas) helped with beginning faith in the jailer’s family, but now it was up to the jailer to lead his family in that same faith. This can be difficult at times, but it is not beyond us.  God has equipped generation after generation in the Church with His Holy Spirit to pass down the faith to their little ones.  We do this, so that our children and grandchildren might know the most wonderful gift in the universe: Christ’s life, death, and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins, so that we would be at peace with God, again!
