The Feast of the Father (OH)
The culminating event in the parable of the Prodigal Son is a feast that welcomes home the son who was lost. The feast represents salvation to all who are invited in by the father. There are 4 ways this feast becomes real to us… first, it is experiential. It isn’t something we just hear and believe, it is something we will be able to feel, when God’s Spirit is within us. Second, it is material. Jesus gives us a meal in the Lord’s Supper to remind us, tangibly, of his sacrifice on the cross for our forgiveness. Third, it is individual. In order to survive and grow, we must eat and drink of this feast (feast being the promise of salvation, not necessarily the Lord’s Supper) regularly. We need to look to the Lord and not the world. And fourth, this feast is communal. That growth occurs when we feast together with other believers as well. We are sustained and encouraged by fellow believers. This feast is salvation, and it is a feast all believers partake in on earth, and ultimately will for all eternity with our Lord in heaven.
