The Lord declares that He One and there is no god beside Him. He calls his followers to commit to him whole-heartedly. For Israel and for us, this means giving up our own way and following God. In exchange God astounds us by revealing himself in a clear way. In the Old Testament he did this through the sacrificial system, but in today he has revealed himself in Jesus. As he reveals himself God calls his followers past and present to pass on their faith to the next generation. 

Unifying Phrase:  Leaving his legacy

• Yahweh declares to Israel that there is no other God -”The Lord our God: The Lord is One.”
• Jesus is one God in three persons, a triune God that is beyond our comprehension.
• Even though he is beyond human comprehension God reveals his character to his people. For Israel this came through the sacrificial system. For us, this comes through Jesus.
• Knowing his character, Jesus now calls us to pass on who he is to the next generation.
