Generally, in English, we refer to this section of Exodus as the Ten Commandments; however, a closer translation in Hebrew is the “Ten Words.” These Ten Words spoken by the LORD are in the imperative form, but are much more than arbitrary commands coming from a controlling Father. The Ten Words are rooted in relationship and a faithful covenant between the LORD and His people. Because of this covenantal relationship between the LORD and His people, the Ten Words are rendered much more like this in their context in Exodus: “BECAUSE I the LORD have remained true to My covenant with Your Fathers and pulled you up out of your slavery and death in Egypt, THEREFORE you will live in this way. You shall have no other gods before me, etc.” These Ten Words are God’s design for how humans were intended to live with Him (Words 1-3) and with one another (Words 4-10).
