Tithing (LR)
Like the Judaic Pharisees, for most people tithing has become purely about fulfilling the Law of Moses; however, Jesus is not interested in you merely fulfilling a law. To Him, it is far more important that you would know why you are supposed to tithe: it is about honoring the name of The Lord and celebrating how He has provided for your every need. Through our thankful generosity, Jesus unleashes his power in us, in our relationships, in our community, and in his world.
Unifying Phrase: Don’t Neglect the More Important Things
- Yahweh instituted the law of tithing, or returning 1/10th of all with which He has blessed you.
- Up until the earthly ministry of Jesus, the most faithful of all Israelites were obsessed with fulfilling every letter of the law to the fullest extent possible (Jews still do this today: Shabbat Elevator).
- Jesus condemned the Pharisees for idolizing their attempts at perfecting The Law instead of focusing their hearts of The Lord.
Tithing was never meant to be a lawful burden, instead it is an invitation to celebrate and thank the Lord for his faithfulness in our lives.
