Jesus declares that He has come into the world to seek and to save the lost. To save sinners; to which the Apostle Paul says in Scripture, “I am the worst” (1 Tim. 1:15). When you read and hear about why Jesus came to Earth, you must do one of two things: One, reject it and not believe it; or two, grapple with your own sinful nature. If you decide route two and your confession of sin is honest, it gets ugly pretty quickly for each of us (as sin permeates our thoughts, actions, and whole beings). The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus came for you and for me. He came to seek and to save us because we were lost. Sometimes, as Christians, we can lose sight of Jesus’ reason for incarnating among humanity. Sometimes we lose sight of our own bleak situation and the depravity that we are in, and instead we begin to look at the misbehaviors and the sins of those around us. We judge. We see the speck in another’s eye while completely missing the tree trunk in our own eye. Jesus reminds us through both His actions and His words that He came to gather lost people—tax collectors and sinners back to His Father. You and I, we are the tax collector. You and I, we are the sinner. But to those who face their depravity and do not overcome it by their own righteousness, but rather by faith and belief in His righteousness, they receive the embrace of the Father. They walk in this life knowing they have been given the full life that God intended to give from the beginning of creation.
